About the Work
You cannot ‘cure’ someone of being LGBT+.
But ‘conversion therapy’ seeks to do just that.
In 2018, after years of lobbying by LGBTQ+ charities, independent healthcare experts and policy makers, the UK Government promised to introduce a ban on ‘conversion therapy’ – the abhorrent practice of attempting to change, suppress or ‘cure’ someone from being LGBTQ+.
In 2023, after years of delays, U-Turns and back tracking, no ban has been introduced.
Finally, and following on the coattails of countries like Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, and Ireland (who swiftly introduced bans) the UK Government has promised to revisit the prospect of its own ban. But until it happens, the abhorrent practice remains 100% legal.
A large and vocal part of The&Partnership’s workforce are LGBTQ+, with an open doors policy to the agency’s leaders. On an issue affecting so many of them personally, the agency was motivated to act and leverage its contacts and creativity to ensure the government honoured its latest promise.
A team of LGBTQ+ employees supported by their allies and the agency’s leaders, brought ‘conversion therapy’ out into the light and exposed it for what it is. Abuse.
They released a short film depicting the horror of a young trans woman being subjected to abuse, coercion, and psychological harm as she undergoes ‘conversion therapy’. The film was gifted to a collective of 21 LGBTQIA+ charities, coordinated by Stonewall who used it as their lightening rod to rally support, influence politicians and open the door with policy makers who will ensure a ban passes.
The film was based on first-hand survivors’ testimony, featured a trans actress and was accompanied by Douglas Dare’s version of ‘It’s a Sin’ by the Pet Shop Boys, who gave their permission for the track to be used for free to support the campaign.
