About the Work
The goal of this project was to bring to life the very real practice of data harvesting and auctioning. Mining Companies and Data Brokers that collect your digital data and sell it to the highest bidder. We needed to create a film that jumped off the screen and helped people see the stark reality of data auctions in a more tangible setting. Enter Dubiou’s — a fictional auction house modeled after genuine companies like Sotheby’s or Christie’s. However, instead of dealing in fine goods, arts, and antiques; Dubiou’s specializes in selling personal information. The film came to life through a multitude of meticulous craft. The auction items themselves were based off real digital data points and translated into physical forms mirroring the type of high art and antiques you’d find in a real world auction. Each character in the audience was hand selected. Knock off Bond villains meant to resemble the reprehensible companies and individuals buying and selling private data. Our location and set design leaning into the seedy underbelly of the dark web. Paying attention to the tiniest of particulars on signage, props, color, and texture. The result was a film that was blunt in its messaging, but precise in its detail. Giving the audience 85 seconds of pure enjoyment before making them realize they should immediately change their privacy settings.
