The coming of age genre is a prevalent type of story across culture, telling the tales of growth, becoming, and tumultuous emotions – but it is the preserve of puberty. Many talk about menopause like puberty in reverse – but where puberty is understood, and represented in storytelling, the menopause is left behind. This is a huge cultural blindspot, with the life stage rarely represented on TV. 1 in 3 women go through the menopause feeling very much alone, and 94% go through the menopause feeling unprepared – as revealed by our #LastLonelyMenopause research project. When we don’t talk about the menopause, it leaves women unsupported and alone.
