About the Work
When a child is born with congenital heart disease the rhythm of life is disrupted. The Swedish Heartchild Foundation is a small, nonprofit organisation contributing with funds for research and support to the children and families affected.
In order to raise awareness, engagement, and donations we created CHD–4 together with audio-visual artist Love Hultén and teenage engineering. A drum machine with arrhythmia, built with the heartbeats of Liv, Janiyah, Wega, and Vincent. Four children with different congenital heart defects.
Each ECG was decoded into a sequencer, enabling the user to play and create with the children’s heartbeats. A unique instrument and an interactive sound experience that created a closer bond with the children affected and the challenges they are and have been facing due to their condition.
The drum machine was unveiled at Sweden's largest music festival Way Out West, and officially launched on September 29th, on World Hearts Day. It toured between artists and creatives during the autumn, creating additional content and awareness, and was launched as a digital version making it available for anyone.
The campaign gained traction in both Swedish and international press (Fast Company, Engadget, Trend Hunter, ICON, Designboom, Yanko Design etc), and without any financial means, it succeeded in increasing the donations with a staggering 48% compared to the same period last year.
CHD–4 ended its journey on Valentine’s day as the drum machine was auctioned out through Stockholms Auktionsverk, generating an additional contribution of 4000 USD to the Heartchild Foundation.
During a five-month period, CHD–4 put the problem of congenital heart disease in the hands of potential donors and made it possible for anyone to experience what happens when small hearts break and the rhythm of life is disrupted.
