America has a sleep problem. We don’t get enough of it. We have a problem prioritizing it. And when we do, it’s not the kind we need. It’s hard to blame ourselves. We live in a world setup for us to stay up. We’re connected to everything and everyone, all the time: working, watching or staying up while we put proper sleep on the back burner. And it’s this complacency and culture that allows Junk Sleep to thrive.
In this film, a sleepless, surreal purgatory is created to examine the underbelly of an ‘always on’ culture and pass commentary on bad bedtime behaviors like binge-watching, looming work deadlines and social media stimulation that fuel our Junk Sleep ways.
The wry script delivers a level of disdain for this world where everyone is deprioritizing their sleep, and a similar level of disdain for the unslept that inhabit it. The written dialogue points toward the pitfalls and perils of poor rest that run rampant in this land of Junk Sleep.
Roulette wheels that look like clocks, work-a-holic slot machines, dealers that dealt out social media posts on phones - the written dialogue points to these visual metaphors with a dry comedic wit walking the viewer through the world, because to fight the enemy, you need to understand it.
