About the Work
what3words (w3w) had built a positioning as a life-saving locator for use in emergency situations. Originally the last-resort of adventurers who had become lost or injured off-grid, it was later adopted more widely by emergency services - but struggled with use cases beyond ‘imminent peril’. The objective then was to reframe w3w from Emergency to Everyday - more useful to more people in more occasions.
We needed to show everyday utility - but we also wanted to keep some of the nail-biting tension w3w was known for. Enter British suburbia (the most quietly fraught of any ‘everyday’ context) and an un-winnable battle of wills between a polite young man and the genteel elderly neighbour who his post has been mis-delivered to. Despite her and her husband’s having blatantly stolen his parcels, the young man is bound by Britishness to avoid any suggestion of conflict, so politely concedes – a loss so easily avoided had he only given his courier his w3w address.
