About the Work
A country where laws are enforced to silence certain voices, where being part of the LGBTQI+ community is considered a crime, and where women need a man's permission to make almost any decision was chosen to host the latest World Cup.
On the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the APDHE (Association for Human Rights Spain) decided to protest against this event through the project: KICKIN' RIGHTS CUP. This work, created by Eugenio Ampudia, replaces the World Cup ball with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and showcases the best 'kickers' in the world destroying the most important document in the history of humanity under the passive gaze of the whole world.
After designing a special edition of the UDHR book, we could see through our website and social networks how the book kept deteriorating after each match, while also tracking data such as the number of kicks it had received and the number of players who had kicked it.
In addition, thanks to a post-production team (consisting of 7 studios), we were generating content in real time, replacing live imagery of the soccer ball during the matches with the book. On several occasions, this content was censored by the social networks themselves, which gave us the strength and motivation to take our project to the streets: creating posters and exposing the book in some of the main European cities, seeking people's opinion.
Journalists, soccer players, activists and artists didn’t hesitate to give their opinion on the project, contributing to shedding light on the violation of rights hidden behind this World Cup.
An hour before broadcasting the World Cup final, TVE (Spanish Public Television) news opened with KICKIN' RIGHTS CUP, Eugenio Ampudia's audiovisual work in which we saw how the best players around the world kicked the UDHR, giving the project all the spotlight during the most popular event of the year, reaching millions of viewers.
The project concluded the event that honored the 75th anniversary of the UDHR and is now one of the most renowned contemporary art galleries in Europe.
KICKIN' RIGHTS CUP is a way to show the whole world that human rights shouldn’t be part of the game.
