Anand Gandhi is a cinema auteur, entrepreneur and a systems thinker. His feature films Ship of Theseus and Tumbbad premiered at Toronto and Venice, and have been awarded at Transilvania, Tokyo, Hong Kong, London BFI, Dubai and Mumbai, among several other international film festivals. Anand also won the highest award in Indian cinema for Ship of Theseus - the National Award for Best Picture. He is the founder and CEO of the contemporary culture powerhouse Memesys Studios, under which he produced the highly celebrated strategy board game SHASN (IndieCade Social Impact Award), the sci-fi comedy for Disney+, OK Computer (premiered at IFFR Rotterdam) and the documentary feature An Insignificant Man (a Sundance co-production, the most theatrically successful ever Indian non-fiction feature). Anand has also directed several decorated, high-impact narrative brand films. His Vicks ‘One In a Million’ film won 4 Cannes Lions in 2019, the most for a single campaign from India, including a Silver Lion and 3 Bronze Lions for Creative Strategy, Film Craft, and Film Healthcare. It also won three Silvers at Spikes Asia for Direction, Script, and Casting in the Filmcraft category. Anand’s Lifebuoy ‘Help a child reach 5’ campaign won a Bronze Cannes Lion in 2017 for creative effectiveness, along with the “Grand Prix” in PR, and “Silver” in Healthcare at Spikes Asia 2016. He has also worked with Gillette, Google, and other brand partners. He created ElseVR, one of the world’s first VR journalism channels. ElseVR partnered with Amnesty International, BBC and UN-VR to create high impact VR films that also premiered at TIFF and London BFI. Anand is deeply invested in the communication of scientific humanism, and is a visiting scholar at UCSD Neuroscience. He has been awarded the ‘Contribution to Indian Philosophy Prize’ by the Jainology department, Mumbai University. He has also been a mentor at the XPrize Visioneers forum and a keynote speaker at Singularity University-INK, IFFI and Mipcom.
