The Outsider is a TV show based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, and it explores the investigation into the gruesome murder of a local boy and the mysterious force surrounding the case. (Spoiler alert) The story quickly takes a turn into body horror, where the villain shapeshifts into other people's bodies - committing crimes and evading investigation. The only trace of his existence is a viscous, alien substance. The main titles echo this violent transformation, distorting the footage underneath into disturbing, impressionist portraits. As the liquid envelops the screen, we witness the alien complexity within in. Each title card was individually treated, with liquid elements carefully choreographed and captured in live action with a macro lens.

My Role was:

I was the art director and design lead on the opening titles for The Outsider. I worked on the initial concept, refining the idea and dialing in the visual style of the fluid animations. After the job was in production, I oversaw the live action shoot of the liquid elements, making sure they were aligned with the aesthetic we were going for, as well as making sure the movement of the liquid coincided with the original idea. After we generated the live action elements, we moved into compositing, where I oversaw the animation of each title card. Each episode required a different approach, while making sure it all felt as a cohesive whole.
