The Alienist is based on the crime novel of the same name by Caleb Carr, set in dark corners of New York City during the final years of the 1800's. The opening titles portray the decomposition of a modern New York into the past; modern slabs of glass and concrete turn into brick and wood, cold street lighting of today turns into warm gas lamp hues, with several architectural icons reforming into their original state (Bowery St, The Statue of Liberty, etc). In between these moments, we see glimpses of human portraits; tin-type inspired mugshots, decaying over time.

My Role was:

I was a designer on The Alienist's opening title sequence. Working closely with the creative and art directors, I developed styleframes for the initial look and feel as well as modelling, lighting, texturing and composition of several key moments in the final sequence (Bowery Street and Statue of Liberty shots). I also assisted the animation team in building the final frame of Manhattan wrapped in fog.
