Description

I set out to make a piece that explored the cultural gradient of the southern U.S. border with Mexico. Because I wanted to speak to the idea of redefining the American experience, I thought it'd be interesting to use a staple of American culture to speak to the ever-evolving definition of what it means to be "American". So while conceptualizing the piece, I decided to center it around a primordial symbol of American culture: Converse's Chuck Taylor sneaker. A month before production, a mass shooting was carried out in my hometown of El Paso, Texas. This xenophobic hate crime impacted the community greatly, but gave the crew and myself further reason to carry on with the project and celebrate the bicultural nature of border communities and their unifying presence along the American south,
