In Brazil, the country with the biggest black population outside of Africa, racism is institutionalized. So, when upcoming artist Baco Exu do Blues asked us to launch his second album - Bluesmen - Douglas Bernardt didn’t make it about the songs. He turned it into a movement that broke the stereotypes of Blackness imposed by society and changed the course of Brazilian rap.

The eight minute short film, reveals the unconscious racism within the viewer, by showing a black man running, not from the police, but because he was late. Provocative scenes reinterpret historical white dominance symbols from a black perspective.

All of the artistic touch points were intentionally designed to ignite self-esteem and a sense of belonging, ultimately inspiring a nationwide movement of black individuals assuming themselves as “Bluesmen”.
The project ignited an important debate on institutional racism, it resignified black culture, and rocketed Baco from the underground of rap into a place of notoriety.
