Description

M·A·C Cosmetics collaborated with me for the design and packaging of their Wander.Lust. City Collection, a set of lipsticks that captures the spirit of nineteen destinations across Asia.

This project stands as one of the biggest opportunities for me to express my versatility as an illustrator. The challenge was to evoke the unique energy of each destination using the textured style that the team at M·A·C appreciated in my illustrations. All nine participating countries provided me with iconography relevant to each city, but it was up to me to translate them into illustrations truly representative of their cities. Most of the artworks are patterns made up of different icons like Davao's cacao, orchid, and durian, Hong Kong's cha chaan teng staples, and Bangkok's tuktuk, chedi, and flower ornaments seen in Wat Pho. Some were more laidback, scenic images like Cebu’s sunny beaches, while others came alive with abstract compositions present in Hongdae’s glowing signs and Shibuya's famous pedestrian crossing. The result is a diverse collection of cities, landmarks, and cultural elements that beautifully come together as a celebration of the glamour of going places.

The collection launched simultaneously in July 2021 across all featured countries. My collaboration with M·A·C is a rare chance to be part of an event of this scale that’s also a first for the brand. As an illustrator, I also emerged from this experience with a greater sense of my abilities and the way I perceive the places I love visiting.

Role in Project
For this project, I was commissioned to illustrate the artworks and icons to be used for the entire collection. I worked directly with M·A·C Asia Pacific's creative director. After getting the mood boards from the participating countries, I proceeded with conceptualising the artworks to be used for each city. I also made an artwork combining all of the icons. It's used on the outer box packaging which houses the set of lipsticks. The campaign photos, videos, and animations were done by the M·A·C Asia Pacific team using the elements. The promo video was done by M·A·C Hong Kong's team for their own launch.
