Catarina (1985, Lisbon) graduated in Communication Design and started working as an independent designer from early on. Her work encompasses different mediums and contexts, switching smoothly between print and screen-based media. Driven by curiosity, she’s always looking for a fresh perspective on things. Poetic too. Catarina believes in a human, culturally-rooted approach to design, combining strategic thinking with powerful creative resources. The focus of her work is communication, finding the purest and precise way to speak about a brand, a project, a product, a thing you love. She enjoys collecting colors, shapes, and ideas to compose her personal visual archives which she later uses in her work. Catarina has been working with Sam Baron, her mentor and flesh-and-blood alter ego, since 2008, first in Fabrica’s Design Studio (Italy) and then in Lisbon. After spending a year in NYC at Karlssonwilker Inc., she returned to her hometown in 2011 to set up Studio AHHA, which lasted until 2018. In 2020, she started This Must Be the Place. Although it’s probably her wildest adventure so far, it’s also where she feels at home. Spanning the globe, her list of clients includes Benetton, Opera de Paris, Vitra, Amazon France, Foam, Gulbenkian.
