Multiple studies show that young people do not believe that the math lessons taught in school help them achieve their real-life goals. As a result, motivation and a sense of meaning are lost. An equation without context or meaning loses its purpose, and we lose motivation. More than 60 million children in the United States participate in organized sports every year, and a majority actively seek ways to optimize their performance. Knowing the math can be a game-changer when it comes to sports, especially for improving performance and precision.

Math that Matters is a solution where Google Gemini puts math in the context of sports. With the Tracking Lens, you can trace the math of your performance. Get the success formula, and optimize your result. Google already has all the building blocks, but they’re scattered across different products. “Innovation” here is about Gemini connecting them.

Mathematical Engine:
Google already has features (e.g., “Math Notes” on Pixel devices) where AI solves handwritten equations.

AR (Augmented Reality):
Google has a platform called ARCore that’s built for exactly this — placing digital graphics (lines and numbers) on top of the real world through the mobile camera.

Computer Vision:
Google Lens can already identify objects in the camera. The technology used to track a ball in motion is already applied in sports (e.g., Hawk-Eye in tennis or VAR in football).

Multimodality:
Gemini is “multimodal,” meaning it can understand text, images, and video simultaneously. It can therefore “look at” a video and “understand” that it’s a throwing motion.

The solution puts math outside of school, in situations that count. Situations where the result matters. By using the mobile camera in Gemini you can in real time see the actual mathematical factors and how they directly affect your result. By doing so, Google Gemini is making math matter.
