Thembi Hanify is an Australian graphic designer and art director based in Ojai, CA. Having graduated from Queensland College of Art, she moved to New York City in 2010 on a whim and began her career working for boutique digital fashion agencies. She then crossed over to in-house luxury fashion branding at 3.1 Phillip Lim and rag & bone. Spurred by the literal sea change of moving from downtown Manhattan to Rockaway Beach, Thembi decided to pursue independent freelance clients over the regular nine-to-five grind. She freelanced for Laird + Partners, Wednesday and Chandelier Creative before a contract opportunity at Apple took her to the west coast. After completing several contracts at Apple, Thembi relocated permanently to California in mid-2019. In 2020 alongside editor Mariah Ernst, she launched an every-person surf magazine called Emocean, that champions diverse perspectives, radical creativity, relatability, empowerment, and especially the narratives of women, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ surfers.
