Zhongkai Li is a designer, curator, and educator who works between Shanghai and Pittsburgh. Li is the founder and director of IS A GALLERY in Shanghai. The gallery is dedicated to engaging with local and international artists, curators, and educators with exhibitions, publications, and public programs centering around the various community-based practices. He has recently curated several exhibitions, including Michel Auder: Iconography, Storytelling, Myth, Irony, Archive (2021), Karel Martens: Reproduction (2021), and Radical Return (ongoing), an exhibition that highlights Chinese and Chinese American graphic designers. He is the Digital Designer at the Carnegie Museum of Art and serves as the Design Director of AIGA Pittsburgh. He holds an MFA in Graphic Design from the Yale School of Art. Previously, he has taught at Parsons School of Design, and has given lectures at the Royal College of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Boston University, and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He has worked across agencies and institutions, such as Base Design, Pratt Institute, and Yale University Art Gallery. His work has been exhibited and featured globally in museums, film festivals, and biennales including The International Festival of Film and Art Books in France, New Haven International Film Festival, The Scotland Graphic Design Festival, and The Golden Bee Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design. He had a recent solo show, Finding Patterns in Time and Place: Poster of Zhongkai Li (2020), at Maharam.
