A NIGHT TO REMEMBER IN A YEAR TO FORGET.
By Brian Denison on Dec 16, 2020
The Rocky Mountain Creative Community enjoyed a bright spot this past Thursday evening as The One Club Awards Denver aired its first (and hopefully last) virtual award show.
In true 2020 fashion, the creative event of the season was hosted not by your favorite, up-and-coming Creative Director, but by a client. An honest-to-god, in-house, data-crunching, spreadsheet savant: Mickey Citarella.
But don’t be fooled. Mickey is every creative’s dream client. Not only does he have an account-side boutique agency background, a passion for producing the biggest and best ideas, and the hair and smile to do it, but he also was the surprise standout from last year’s One Club Awards Denver.
Yes, in those oh-so-innocent before times, Mickey had much of the audience rolling on the floor, banging on their tables, and choking on their hors’ dourves as he called out the industry for all its hilarious quirks. His brutally honest, roast-like delivery was such a hit that we recruited him to do it all again this year.
And so began the show. Kicking off on Facebook Premiere, the evening began with a series of champagne pours. One for the idea graveyard, one for our lives, and one for the industry as a whole. The light roasting then continued with color commentary on many of the winning pieces of work. Each of the Bronze, Silver and Gold categories started with the student winners, then moved on to the agencies and freelancers. It’s truly amazing to see all of the fun, brilliant, and creative work that came out of the community even in as trying a year as this.
Then, for our first time ever, we included Best of Show for both students and professionals. The student Best of Show went to Emily Devery, Graciela Robertson, and Hayley Lyons from Denver Ad School for their WINC “We’ve Got a Wine For That” campaign. And the professional Best of Show went to Cactus for their “Citizen Impeachment” moving image and animation. You can watch those, and all the rest of the winners in our online Archive.

Huge thanks to our sponsors Cactus, GRIT, Coupe Studios, Link Product Development, and J.W. Refells Metal Foundry for all their support in making the show a reality. The Rocky Mountain Creative Community is truly better because of your contributions.
And another huge thanks to all the volunteers like David Smail who helped plan the show, Krissy Gilhooly who did the design, Jason Dewitt who shot video, Brian Denison for editing and animation, and Emily Lennon for helping promote it on social media. Here’s to an even better, more vaccinated and less-virtual celebration next year. Stay safe and happy creating!
