Art That Speaks - 3 TV Spots: Jerry Brown (potter), Gees Bend Quilters, Charlie Lucas (metal sculptor) / Alabama Department of Tourism
Submitted By Luckie & Company
Description
To draw visitors to Alabama by highlighting the unique art and artists of the state.
Objective
Same as above
Technical Challenge
Though these spots are ultra-simple, we spent a lot of time making sure we stayed true to the art. We were very cautious because we were taking rare and important works of african-american vernacular art and making them talk. Treated with respect, the concept suggests these works are the true voice of the artists...and this is what we wanted. But pushed a little too far, they could be a sort of defacing of the art...something we tried to avoid at all costs. It was very important to us not to get into cartoonish-land. So, technically, this meant obsessing about texture and movement, light behavior. All of which are unique in this case. The materials used to create this amazing art are not materials you see animated very often...things like hand made pottery and raggly quilts.
