Here Are All The Black People

THANK YOU!

Thank you for making Here Are All the Black People 2019 an incredible success!

Each year, we strive to take HAATBP’s mission to improve diversity and inclusion in the creative industry to new heights. This year was no exception. We welcomed over 650 students and industry professionals, 34 sponsors, and provided over 60 travel stipends to students and recent graduates from 14 states. Our ninth annual HAATBP was one of the most successful to date.

The night before the big conference and career fair, we hosted a welcome reception at VMLY&R exclusively for mid-level professionals. Attendees networked and were treated to an artist showcase. The next day, HAATBP kicked off with an inspiring keynote by Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter. We hosted panels and workshops aimed at professional and personal development and provided ample opportunities to network with recruiters and participate in portfolio reviews.

Next year marks the 10th-anniversary HAATBP. We promise to make it the largest, most exciting, and impactful event yet! We can’t wait to see you there.

Best,
The One ID Team

2019 Keynote Speaker

Here Are All The Black People Keynote Speaker

Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter

Tariq Trotter, better known as Black Thought, is an American rap artist and co-founder of the Philadelphia hip-hop group, The Roots. Trotter is widely lauded for his rhythmically complex and reference-driven lyrical content, his sharply honed live performances, and the fluidity of his creative abilities.

Raised in South Philadelphia, Trotter attended the city's School of Creative and Performing Arts where he met Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and formed the band the Square Roots. After releasing their 1993 demo/debut Organix under the simplified moniker "The Roots", Trotter’s narratives grew more personal and political in nature, artistically expanding both him and the band.

The Roots’ 1999 album Things Fall Apart catapulted the group into the mainstream. Winning a Grammy Award for its lead single, “You Got Me” featuring Erykah Badu, Things Fall Apart garnered Trotter critical acclaim as the “lyricist’s lyricist” according to Rolling Stone. Similar praise was given to their 2010 project, Wake Up!, a collaborative effort with John Legend inspired by the political landscape of the 2008 elections, and winning a Grammy Award for “Best R&B Album” a few months later. This blending of art and political awareness also seeped into Trotter’s personal and philanthropic life, as a board member of Philadelphia’s own Mural Arts and continued support of organizations including OkayAfrica, The Agent for Change Network, Artists for a New South Africa, The New Museum of New York, and the Museum of Modern Art.

Under the leadership of Trotter and Thompson, The Roots began a decade-long relationship with Jimmy Fallon as his NBC house band in 2009, and transitioning to the house band for the new Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2014. Trotter also began a foray into acting, including notable roles in the James Brown biopic Get On Up and the HBO series The Deuce.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Here Are All The Black People

The place, a Christmas party at famed San Francisco agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners, where a young black creative asked founder Jeff Goodby the tongue-in-cheek but definitely not tongue-in-cheek question,"Where are all the black people?".

After many conversations on creating job opportunities for minority students and graduates pursuing careers in advertising and design, Goodby and fellow creative legend Jimmy Smith spearheaded a panel during The One Club's 2011 Creative Week with that attention-grabbing question as its title. This led to The One Club for Creativity developing this panel into a full-day diversity-focused career fair later that fall. The success of these two events ensured this would become an important annual touchpoint for everyone in advertising for whom cultural diversity isn't just a checkbox, but a crucial fact of professional life. By 2014, with hundreds of attendees, it was no longer a question of "where" were all the black people — they were right here, ready to be counted.

2019 marks the ninth exciting year of HAATBP, and although the conference warmly welcomes attendees of all cultures and races, and has grown to include programming for those with more experience on their resumes, its name remains as unapologetically bold as ever.
