VH1 Supersonic / VH1

This film was the official promo for VH1 Supersonic 2019 - one of the biggest music festivals in India. But more than that, this film is a celebration of music and the generation it shaped. The idea was to encapsulate the music festival’s mood, inclusive spirit, and the diversity of the people that attended it. We employed a narrative that evoked nostalgia and connected people from diverse backgrounds, and a visual language that stood out from amongst the usual festival promotional videos.

Objective

Since its inception VH1 Supersonic has largely focussed on EDM and their lineup and the crowds they gathered has reflected that. But over the last couple of years, there has been a conscious effort to include other genres and bands to their lineup. With this in mind, VH1 came to us with the objective to create a promotional video that encapsulates the music festival’s mood, inclusive spirit, and the diversity of the people that attended it.

Technical Challenge

The challenges while making this film were numerous. We were operating on a shoestring budget, casting, working, and coordinating with 60 non-actors from diverse backgrounds, covering 10 locations, with each space having its own set of obstacles, and shooting for match cuts. We shot all of this in only 3 days, with an extremely tight delivery timeline of two weeks.
Being a promotional video for one of the largest music festivals in India, music was integral to the film. We weren’t just trying to nail the quality, but were also aiming for diversity, and wanted to produce a track that captured the mood and covered many genres. This was definitely a challenge, and one that pushed us creatively.
