Girl With The Pearl Earrings / Myself
Submitted By Kiana Gatling
This is an oil painting on a 24x 36 in canvas. The inspiration behind this piece came from my love for contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley. As an artist, Wiley recreates ancient portraits, & replaces the people in them with people of color. This is important to me, as I consider myself someone who also strives to make sure people of color are both seen and heard. As a way to show my personal support for Wiley, & his work, I appropriated the antique painting “Girl with the pearl earrings” & replaced the beautiful fair toned woman in the portrait, with myself. Liberating my darker skin, as just as worthy to be in such praised art.
To honor Kehinde Wiley and his work while also practicing my own Painting Skills
