Jokes (screenprint) / Myself
Submitted By Kiana Gatling
This piece is a CMYK screenprint centered around the mental health of black women. After seeing the Joker movie I was extremely inspired to start a conversation about how we, as women of color deal with our pain. In my family, we tend to deal with our pain & trauma through “not-so-funny” jokes. So for my background, I decided to fill that space with those same types of jokes in a bright yellow, making them less obvious to the eye. I then went back & highlighted certain parts of the jokes that I wanted to stand out, as a “read between the lines” sort of thing.
The background repeats these 6 jokes:
I can measure the speed of an object. Because I want to km/s.
My memes are ironic but my depression is chronic.
My neck, my back, my crippling anxiety attacks.
How do you get a depressed person out of a tree? You cut the rope.
Are you a toaster? Because I want to take a bath with you.
I’m made with depression, extra anxiety, a little side of crazy, and a sprinkle of leave me tf alone.
To discuss the mental health of black women specifically, and be vulnerable about tough truths.
