2019-20 Season Branding / Obsidian Threatre
Submitted By Seowon Bang
Description
Obsidian Theatre presents poignant works written and produced by Black playwrights. I was tasked with designing and producing all theatre-related collateral, including the season brochure, programme booklets, digital and print ads, and posters.
Objective
To promote the theatre's season of productions
Technical Challenge
Right off the bat, two of their productions for the 19/20 season were partner presentations with already-established visual branding. I needed to come up with a way to create separate visual identities for each of the remaining shows, while making sure that when looked as a whole, every single one of them amounts to a cohesive visual representation of Obsidian as a brand.
I designed a logotype for each of the productions, playing on big and bold typographical treatments. The three show graphics have frames that interact with the photos and typography in differenty ways. I also art directed the photoshoots to evoke the themes or visual cues from the plays (chaotic multiplicities of views and memories for 'Actually', a bird's eye view of the main characters and a play on the power lines and shadows for 'Blacktop Sky')
