What does winning this award mean to you?

I’m delighted, of course, and thankful for the great teams that I’ve had the chance to work with — a few of which have included previous Young Guns winners.

It’s not easy to be a successful creative. What sorts of challenges have you encountered to get where you are today?

My background and education is in music, so coming to the creative industries I didn’t have any clear, preconceived idea of what a Creative Technologist does. I am always working out what my version of that title means by making, designing, and doing.

How did you decide what to enter into Young Guns? Was it a challenge to curate yourself?

I wanted to choose work that has a clear visual and experiential aspect, but that is matched by a strong underlying technology. My favourite kind of work has both sides of the coin – the stuff you see, and the stuff you don’t – that add up to form an experience.

Can you name any past Young Guns winners who you look up to, whose work you admire or are even inspired by?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with a few past Young Guns winners  —Jack Beveridge (YG14), Xavier Barrade (YG11), Graeme Hall (YG8). Each of them is amazingly talented in different ways…they’re people I never fail to learn something from.

What keeps you going, creatively speaking?

Not knowing what to do next. It’s important to reflect and draw on experience, but my favourite projects are ones where you don’t know exactly what your next step is, and you’re always on your toes working out what direction to take.

Now that you’re a Young Guns winner, what’s next?

Stay hungry for new things to explore. The great thing about tech is that there’s always something new to be making sense of; always a new space to work in. Right now I am thinking a lot about visual design in a world without screens.
