What does winning this award mean to you?

Young Guns is such an incredible honor — I’m still waiting for the followup “hey we actually got it wrong” email. I attended a ceremony a few years ago, and I was so floored by the variety of work and the level of talent and craftsmanship and how *cool* everyone was. I really never dreamed I’d have any work on a wall in that room someday.

It’s not easy to be a successful creative. What sorts of challenges have you encountered to get where you are today?

The medium I chose can be a little tough — it’s hard to actually get in the position to do the work. Filmmaking is typically expensive and requires lots of help. I’ve been doing it at a certain level my whole life, so I’ve always made small things for myself by myself in that world, but when I moved down the filmmaking path as a profession it really changed how I worked. All of the pieces I submitted for Young Guns were films or videos I made for clients, and that relationship has been (at times) difficult to navigate. I assume this is true for any professional in the arts. How can you make art for a business? As a business? What are you willing to compromise? I still deal with this everyday on every project. It hurts especially when I have, like, $5.00.

How did you decide what to enter into Young Guns? Was it a challenge to curate yourself?

I wanted a good spread. I try to bounce from genre to genre and I wanted to represent that. But also Young Guns is an esteemed institution: I assumed you all wouldn’t be interested in some of the work that’s more — junk food. I tried to keep it art. I also don’t totally remember what I submitted, I was pretty nervous.

Can you name any past Young Guns winners who you look up to, whose work you admire or are even inspired by?

As a music video director I’m obviously a massive fan of The Daniels (YG14) and to join the Young Guns ranks with them is really pretty unbelievable. Nobody tell them. Do not tell them.

What keeps you going, creatively speaking?

I am trying to find something hidden inside American pop film culture and I look everyday. I think audiences get smarter and more sophisticated and the bar is constantly rising and it pushes me! It feels great to be making things right now.

Now that you’re a Young Guns winner, what’s next?

Young Guns 2. Let’s ride.
