What does winning Young Guns mean to you?

As a child, being awarded is a pretty common thing — there are awards for basically everything. When growing older, however, people expect more and more from you, and being honored tends to become a rather rare occurrence. Now that I really love what I’m doing, I feel very delighted about being awarded for something I think I’m good at and what I really enjoy doing.

It’s not easy to be a successful creative. What sorts of challenges have you encountered to get where you are today? How did you overcome them?

Night shifts, frustration, balance between work and private life, trying to explain to my parents what 3D is, ups and downs — every day is a challenge. I think the issue is not how to overcome all these challenges but to learn how to deal with them, to keep on doing, having trust in yourself and loving what you do.

How did you decide what to enter?

It’s always hard to curate your own work. Working on a project means you’re watching your work all the time. My selection of work include most of my recent projects that I still like looking at and not get bored from.

Can you name any past Young Guns winners who you look up to, whose work you admire or are even inspired by?

There are definitely a few, but I wouldn’t say there is the one creative or the one project for me. it’s more the fact that these Young Guns are inspiring people who keep on doing things and have found their niche in the creative industry.

What keeps you going, creatively speaking?

As a professional illustrator, you’re always confronted with lots of different topics, I really like that. Although I’m doing the same thing — illustration—- it feels like it’s always something new. For me as a freelancer, it’s nice to schedule my own time; I can try out new directions, work on a self-initiated project or work on some commissions. It’s always interesting and it’s always something new. And of course It’s always great to see your final work in action!

Now that you’re a Young Guns winner, what’s next?

I’m open to discover new directions and fields, but also just keep on doing what I do now.
