The ADC Jury Chairs reveal what they are most looking forward to about judging your work this season

Discussion and deliberation is the name of the game when it comes to designating Cube-worthy work. We talked to the ADC Jury Chairs who will be spearheading the discussion when it comes to reviewing your entries. This time around, we asked them what they are most looking forward to seeing and what advice they would like to give to the other judges. We can tell they are ready and eager to hand out Cubes this season– but only if your work deserves it.

Check out what else the Jury members have been discussing in Trailblazers, Wishful Thinking, and Looking Back to Look Ahead. You have TWO days to meet the next ADC 102nd Annual Awards deadline– enter your work by Friday, February 17!

Being on a jury is exciting, humbling, and inspiring all at once. The multitude of work you get to see is truly amazing. It’s a great exercise in trying to understand different industries, product categories, and cultural nuances. The most rewarding part is the community– it’s an opportunity to spend time with the brilliant creatives on the jury and discuss the work and their experiences. You also discover new perspectives and ways of thinking. I will tell my fellow judges to trust their gut instinct but confirm with their minds. Often something looks great or really bad at a first glance, but giving yourself a beat to analyze why you feel a certain way about a piece of work might give you new insights. I think every piece of work entered deserves that.

As always, I’m looking forward to seeing work I haven’t seen before. The world of editorial design has been deeply challenged which has driven some exciting innovations– from brilliant digitally-native experiences to projects embracing the physical reading experience. A visit to Jeremy Leslie’s MagCulture website or London store is always a feast of independent publishing. Long live print. Dear judges - let’s celebrate designs that are sincerely trying to engage with audiences outside our own world of design.

I can’t wait to discuss the work and learn from my jury members. That’s always the best part. It’s rewarding to hear how brilliant people you respect see things differently. My advice to all judges is to embrace your own inner envy of others greatness, and reward what you would have killed to have made yourself.

I am most looking forward to seeing creativity and how people think out of the box. It is always an honor to be invited to judge and I take it quite seriously. I would advise my fellow judges to be aware of authenticity and originality. Ask yourself the question, “does the designer’s idea have the potential for commercial production?” Make everyone who entered feel worthy.

The discussions and reactions are what I’m most excited about. ADC always selects a wide variety of judges who come from various backgrounds and positions, and I love hearing different perspectives on what others believe constitutes Cube-worthy design. I’m looking forward to hearing some constructive debates going on within the group - let’s be fair, honest, and unafraid about voicing our opinions.

I look forward to encountering creative gemstones in the rough—young, never-seen-before, and as-yet unimaginable to me.

A healthy debate, an inspirational entry, and as always, what I haven’t seen before. My advice to fellow jurors? Be generous and rigorous. We have to set the bar high.

I’m excited to see the breadth of work in this field. I look forward to being exposed to projects outside of my usual disciplines and can’t wait to see what brilliant creative entries we receive.

Your perspective sharpens when you hear others points of view, and seeing work is a way to understand what architects are thinking about here and now. Cube-worthy architectural and environmental projects confront issues that need critical reflection, and critique the status-quo.
