Adapt or Die

ADC 101+1 artist shares her experience experimenting with AI

At this point, AI has been colliding with just about everything and everyone, and at The One Club for Creativity, we had to get in on the robot fun (or fury). We launched ADC 101 + 1, which is an online art gallery created by Pereira O’Dell and developed by lili Studios that highlights the intersection of art/design and AI. We asked 101 designers to use AI as a tool to make a piece of art that would live in the ADC 101 + 1 virtual reality with the “+1” serving as the AI image generator.

We reached out to Ghada Wali over in Egypt who participated in this collaborative experiment to tell us how it went for her and here’s what she had to say.

What is really interesting about AI is obviously the instant ability to create, concrete, amend, tweak, and the “your wish is my command” one click away visual solution. Even though it seems like the possibilities are endless, I am still restrained to the content online, and the simulation of a computer will never really be able to depict the visual representation I have in my head. This might sound against all the opinions on AI, but its true. If you think about it, you are really limited to a code, an output, a library, even if it is close to reading a human’s mind. The full freedom of an artist is an inseparable quality to creativity, but at the same time an artist should adapt to the changing mediums of expression in this age, and AI is definitely an adapt or die type of equation.

" If you think about it, you are really limited to a code, an output, a library, even if it is close to reading a human’s mind."

What is really fascinating in my industry and as a Creative Director is how much this tool miraculously works thanks to the tech people. It cuts down lead time on creating essential deliverables such as sketches, storyboards, realizations or even references for clients. It has incredibly affected the workflow cycle for me and my team in various ways, especially because we work in advertising– a very stressful and fast paced industry with constant expectations to turnover ideas overnight. It has become a real help in times of creative blocks or bottle necks. If you are lucky, AI could also become a real artistic conversation where the outputs could add, inspire, or even surprise your original idea.

Thanks to ADC 101 + 1, this was my first experience with AI and it really opened the doors to many possibilities that I have been reluctant to try. I’m honored and excited to take part in this global experiment with creatives around the world, and I am anticipating how AI outputs will bring diversity and different contexts into our cultures.

Ultimately, depending on how creatives use AI will determine whether it will have a positive or negative impact on our industry. It will become dangerous to the creative mind if we progress to using AI as a means of finding solutions rather than a tool to execute the existing solutions in our heads.
