About the Work

This provocative campaign explores theories as to why there is such a significant gender gap in computer science and coding. It features girls talking about why they can’t code. One film “Boobs” focuses on how boobs get in the way of coding, another film “Menses” blames menstruation, a third points at beauty and the compilation film “Girls Can’t Code” says all of these girl things are the reason. The idea that girls can’t code because they’re girls is flat out ridiculous. Yet the gender gap persists partly because the notion that coding is somehow harder for girls is so ingrained in our culture that many don’t even question it. Seeing girls verbalize reasons that are clearly absurd empowers them to go beyond these stereotypes. Each film ends with the statement that girls do code and “every other theory is ridiculous.”
