About the Work
Designed to respond to the faceted geometry of the Rental Car Center, DAZZLE, is a monumental public art installation transflorming the structure into a dynamic mural. The artists drew inspiration from "razzle-dazzle" ship camouflage used in World War I that was intended to alter the perception of ships to the enemy by visually scrambling their shapes and outlines. The artwork uses ground-breaking, solar-powered e-paper technology to present animations that travel back and forth across the 1600 linear foot façade to evoke water ripples, moving traffic, dancing snowflakes and shifting dazzle patterns. The bold graphic elements and animations are seen daily by hundreds of thousands of motorists commuting between San Diego and LA. DAZZLE is the region's largest high-tech public art installation and the world's first permanent exterior application of e-paper technology. DAZZLE represents a living, breathing demonstration of what could become a radical transformation of building façades around the world.
