About the Work

Phillip Pullman’s epic His Dark Materials trilogy deftly explores monumental topics of physics, philosophy, theology, and the very nature of human existence. Our titles needed to set the tone for each episode, by exciting existing fans and drawing in new ones, unfamiliar to the books. The sequence had to capture incredibly complex themes and ideas in a small amount of time, while somehow portraying Pullman’s multiverse setting. All of this had to be enveloped in a unique and visually stunning aesthetic, rich with symbolism and iconography. Our solution - the viewer’s journey starts with a big bang on a molecular level – atoms colliding and bursting into life. Dust particles coalesce to form objects of intrigue and artifacts from Pullman’s books. From here the odyssey continues and our view becomes wider, initially traveling through multi-perspective corridors, then into M.C. Escher-inspired landscapes that suggest worlds beyond our perception. We then discover that this world is but one of many. In the final moments of this mind-bending journey, we arrive back where we started as multi-dimensional worlds collapse into a single infinite strand that slices through the incomprehensible void, creating the logotype of His Dark Materials.
