About the Work
Joe Berlinger asked us to create a title sequence from the point of view of one of the most notorious serial killers in the world. To do this we shot macro photography of clear, plastic, recordable audio tapes and used the plastic as a lens to distort images of women and advertising from the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Because the audio in the series features Ted Bundy talking about the murders, the title sequence design sought to visualize what's on the tapes. Images of women are cropped to appear dismembered, decapitated. Two victim portraits are juxtaposed to create a cubist portrait to show his victimology. The visual content of the audio tapes is projected on the tape itself as it leaves the spool. The plastic pulls into focus details of the cases as if through these audio tapes, we're able to see these events clearly for the first time. In the title shot, the duality of Ted is juxtaposed to show the smiling mask he puts on to hide from the world.
