About the Work

Even after the #metoo and #timesup movements, very few opportunities are given to women directors in Hollywood. But the Brooklyn Film Festival has always been a platform for disruptive voices and wants to fix what Hollywood broke. So in 2019, we decided to take a stand by making a film about the toxic levels of sexism and sexual misconduct in Hollywood. The film, called “The Gathering”, is about three actresses playing the roles they were denied because they refused the unwanted advances of powerful gatekeepers. Combining genres, tropes and time periods, the film is an allegory about opportunities lost. The characters, dialogue, costumes, props and score were all references to famous stories of alleged sexual misconduct in Hollywood; watch closely for hints hidden throughout the film. When we showed the film to Ashley Judd–who inspired one of the characters–she agreed to provide the voiceover, and when BFF released it online, she was the first to retweet it. The film premiered at the Brooklyn Film Festival and played before over 100 screenings to over 36,000 festival attendees.
