About the Work

Last year, national evening news programs in the United States spend just 55 minutes covering climate change. As the global protector of journalistic ethics, the Columbia Journalism Review needed to act, and launched Covering Climate Now to right this wrong. Covering Climate Now is a growing global alliance of news outlets and journalists, united in their push to increase climate coverage to a level that reflects the gravity of the problem we’re facing. To launch a coordinated week of climate coverage, the Columbia Journalism Review held an immersive press event at the Foley Gallery in New York, where the front pages of major news publications from across the globe were weather-damaged according to climate data interpretations from The Earth Institute, a leading association of climatologists. Journalists from as far away as Tokyo visited to see the effects climate change will have on their home cities, based on UN climate data modeling. And in the days following the launch, hundreds of new partners joined the Covering Climate Now alliance, resulting in a global alliance of over 440 news outlets from 47 different countries. Together, that alliance generated more climate coverage in one week, than in the past 10 years combined.
