The ABC’s of Survival is a dual-purpose book designed to create change in mental health and in law-making to fight racism. The book puts “the talk” about daily survival that many Black families have into writing and allows a safe space for parents, teachers, and children to learn and take action. We created this book as a symbol for something that has largely gone unwritten. As such, we wish this book did not exist, but feel that it needs to in order to help kids of all ethnicities learn about equality — and to help fight for it. Thus, the back half of the book is designed to tear apart into action items: protest posters (designed by Black children), political-change postcards (to be sent to your local representative), and stickers (to proudly wear). The book is the brainchild of Shamel and Tiffany Washington and is created entirely by Black artists and other artists of color, with original illustrations and photography that pair with each letter of the alphabet. More than 10 school have already adopted the book as part of their curriculum and we've had more then one thousand e-book downloads to date through www.abcsofsurvival.com.
