About the Work
Despite the hardships of 2020, there’s no denying that there was also an incredibly strong sense of community that shaped this year. WhatsApp broke bittersweet records with the amounts of messages that were sent through the platform. That’s why they wanted to show the importance of relationships with family and friends during these tough times and wish for a hopefully happier New Year. Since the film had to work for different core markets, it was important that people of all ages, no matter where in the world, could find a piece of themselves in the film and its characters.
On New Year’s Eve, the protagonist relives all the highs and lows of her special 2020 by scrolling through her WhatsApp family chat, as if it was a diary. The scrolling is the core editing element of the film. It transitions between chat and memories seamlessly and tells the product in a very unobtrusive way. Chat conversations, voice messages, and video calls enhance the emotional roller coaster of the year-in-review, edited in way that they blur the lines between phone screens and reality. In the protagonist’s memories, we find that while there was hardship and frustration, she also remembers the support and closeness of her family. As a viewer you can relate because you have felt it yourself. The film hence manages to show our year through the lens of a single family and lands on a strong message: Even in a really tough year like this, where we had to stay apart from the people we love the most, it’s the bond we shared that got us through.
