About the Work

Nelson, creates an ode to the memorable summer of 2020, one that is marked by social change, protests, and social distancing. In DISTANT SUMMER, Nelson's annual summer cover painting for The New Yorker features a lonesome yet patriotic youngster who stares squarely into the eyes of the viewer. As he enjoys a frozen ice pop, he is torn between wanting to be a kid while being forced to consider his future in the bizarre and rapidly changing world around him.
