About the Work

The story from well-known author and psychologist Jonathan Haidt discuss how social media dissolved the mortar of society and made America stupid. According to the author metaphor, in the mid 2000's we where amazed with the creation of a second Babel Tower: social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube where born with the goal/idea that the whole world could connect, communicate and share. But with the appear of the "Like" button and phenomenons like "virality" and "fake news" the common language we were sharing in this new Babel suddenly start to make us divided, confused, polarized and more stupid. This confusion affected trust, belief in institutions, and shared stories we needed as society to operate. We need to understand that we live in a post-babel era where we need to make the changes needed in this platforms in order to have and healthy society for the future. What would it be like to live in Babel in the days after its destruction? We know. It is a time of confusion and loss. But it is also a time to reflect, listen, and build.

The visual solution come from the babel metaphor itself. the idea of combine visually the past with the present, the use of traditional art forms like painting with the modern visual tropes and iconography of social media to show how this platforms has affected us as society in the wrong way was the way to go. The series show not only the fall of this tower, but also convey visually how this platforms have damaged us individually and as society, but not only that. the sense of hope after this fall for the future.

This story became the most read article in 2022 for the magazine in its print and online edition.
