About the Work
In the U.S., more than 5 million kids stay in the hospital every year. According to the National Institutes of Health, hospitalization disrupts children’s lives and can produce feelings of anxiety, fear, and pain. During hospitalization, play is proven to be of high therapeutic value, contributing to physical and emotional well-being and to the children’s recovery.
We knew we had to do something.
We conceived of a small electric vehicle called the Honda Shogo. The Shogo is a kid-size car that young patients can drive around the hospital, which gives them the gift of play. The car was designed by Honda Racing engineers to maximize the fun the hospitalized kids could have — but also to make it as inclusive as possible, so kids with IVs or mobility issues could use it. All of the work, from the first drawings to the final vehicles that drove through the hospital hallways, was done with donated time. The campaign goal was always to reach as many hospitalized children as possible across the country. That rollout has now begun, starting in Ohio and followed by hospitals in Indiana, with plans for 60 Shogo vehicles reaching kids in hospitals across the country.
