Background

“China TDC” is the core vehicle for Chinese character design research and practice. Based on the theme of Typographic Design in China, we aimed to showcase a series of high-quality typographic design works to reveal the connotation of the “TDC” theme shared by Chinese people around the world. In the design of the main visual identity for 2024, we analysed the symbiotic relationship between typography, history, design, urban form, branding and industrial development, and carried out an in-depth exploration of typographic design across multiple aesthetics.

Creative Idea

The design is presented with the three title letters “T”, “D” and “C” as the main graphic elements, combined with a specific grid system for graphic expression. The relationship between the translation and communication of “graphics” and “text” has always been an important proposition in typography. The main visual of the exhibition tries to bring the text back to graphics by designing the three letters of “TDC” in a unfamiliar grid font, which means graphics are text. In the motion design, the three letters “T”, “D” and “C” are transformed into each other and appear alternately through the unified grid changes, which expresses the relationship between type design and graphic symbols. Changes in the reference lines within the grid system lead to changes in the graphic and textual arrangement of the letters, symbolising the ever-widening boundaries of typography through continuous exploration, reaching out to infinite visual possibilities. The vertical and horizontal distribution of the grid system also echoes the horizontal and vertical spatial layout of the exhibition venue “Kongzhong Zhujing of Idea Factory”, making the graphic language and spatial experience one and the same.

Insights & Strategy

By holding relevant activities, a series of high-quality text design works will be presented to the public, enhancing the public's understanding and appreciation of text design. In-depth analysis of the symbiotic relationship between text, history, design, urban form, brand construction and industrial development will be conducted to provide theoretical support and practical guidance for the development of related fields, reflect the diversity of Chinese character design, and promote the future development of Chinese character design.

Execution

By constructing a specific grid system, the three letters "T", "D" and "C" are designed. The overall design tone is innovative and exploratory. Through the unfamiliar grid font design and unique dynamic changes, it breaks the audience's perception of traditional text design, inspires the audience to think deeply about the relationship between text design and graphics, and creates a creative and artistic visual atmosphere. The work is always created around the theme, ensuring that every design element is closely related to the theme. From text, graphics to dynamic changes, it conveys the theme connotation and the symbiotic relationship between text and other fields.

Results

As an international design event created by the Shenzhen Graphic Design Association, "China TDC" has successfully enhanced Shenzhen's international status as a "design capital", which helps to enhance the brand's international influence and competitiveness. The successful holding of the exhibition can attract more sponsors and partners, and bring business cooperation opportunities to the organizer. The unique visual image design is easy to get media attention and reports, which can increase the media exposure of the exhibition and expand the market influence to a certain extent.
