Apple paid homage to Mexican and Hispanic roots in its Shot on iPhone film titled "Suerte," which blended Música Mexicana and the traditional Mexican board game Lotería. The campaign celebrated the fastest-growing Latin music sub-genre through innovative storytelling.
Shot on iPhone 15 Pro, the film followed the journey of young Hispanic artist Iván Cornejo, who overcame creative block through a deep connection with his roots. Characters from Lotería, including a fish, the devil, and a mermaid, came to the artist's rescue, helping him find musical inspiration for his new song.
The 20-year-old singer-songwriter Cornejo debuted his song "Intercambio Injusto" in the film. His authentic approach to modernizing Música Mexicana had earned him the No. 10 spot on Billboard's 2023 year-end Top Latin Artists chart. The film also featured notable artists including Música Mexicana performer Eden Muñoz as the frog's voice, Maria Zardoya of The Marías as the mermaid, and Mexico City-based producer Camilo Lara.
Los Angeles-based Mexican-American directors Cliqua (Pasqual Gutierrez and Raul 'RJ' Sanchez) helmed the project, utilizing iPhone 15 Pro's key features including 5x optical zoom, Action mode, and Cinematic mode to create innovative visuals.
The campaign appeared on digital, TV, and social platforms across markets, with additional OOH support in Mexico. A behind-the-scenes video demonstrated iPhone 15 Pro's filmmaking capabilities. The campaign culminated in a special Today at Apple session at Antara, Mexico City, featuring a 30-minute live performance by Ivan Cornejo in partnership with Apple Music.
The campaign successfully merged cultural traditions with modern technology while showcasing both the iPhone 15 Pro's creative capabilities and the evolution of Música Mexicana.
