Like the global cinema industry, Helsinki International Film Festival has struggled to reach pre-pandemic visitor levels. To help secure the festival's survival for the next year (2025) they had to sell a lot of tickets, which is why this time their yearly promo film needed to resonate with a broader audience than local cinephiles. The film taps into the negative effects of excessive screen time that we're all familiar with and reminds us that they can be remedied by an increased dose of silver screen time.
Because the budget for the film was VERY limited (under 5000€) most artistic choices were also choices of necessity. Overall the film has a very matter-of-fact, even dry, delivery – just like a visit to the doctor's office. It reads more like an epicrisis than a dramatic run down the corridors of ER. The slow pacing works as a deliberate juxtaposition to the rapid cutting of social media-optimized videos. The pacing also gives the viewer room to make their own assessment – and realization: "That could be me."
To avoid coming off as an elitist film festival that talks down to the TikTok generation, the protagonist was cast as an older man. Also, it's more fun to venture down the algorithm rabbit hole (or rectum in this case) of someone we might not immediately associate with TikTok. And yet, somehow we can still all relate and identify ourselves in Hämäläinen.
