For our Olympics issue, the photographer Ben Thouard brought his technical and visual acuity to one of the most powerful waves in the world, Teahupo’o, which was the site of the first-ever Olympic surfing competition at this summer’s Games. His meditative and luminous photographs and videos help the viewer to understand the wave’s danger and seduction. Instead of taking photos from a boat, Thouard gets in the water himself and, as the waves approach, dives under the surface. From beneath the waves, or inside their barrels, Thouard puts viewers in the action, making them feel as though they are somehow creating the waves themselves.
