The war in Gaza is nearly impossible to flee — except for a small number of sick and wounded people who are offered a dramatic path to safety. Only those with life-threatening injuries — a lost leg, a cancer diagnosis, a missing arm, or blindness in both eyes — are allowed to leave. In October and November 2024, the photographer Paolo Pellegrin made multiple trips to the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and Egypt to document the evacuation process and attention to understand the complicated journey. Pellegrin was granted special access to accompany the humanitarian aid flight departing from Abu Dhabi before finally arriving at an airstrip near the Israeli city of Eilat. In Israel, they watched as wounded Gazans boarded a humanitarian flight aboard a converted passenger jet plane bound for Abu Dhabi. Their destination was the Emirates Humanitarian City, a custom built housing complex for injured refugees. This journey is one of the only escapes from a conflict that has claimed the lives of an estimated 45,000 people, more than half of them women and children.
