Background
The Festival de Cinéma de la Ville de Québec (FCVQ) positions itself as a dynamic space for dialogue, countering a cultural landscape of singular narratives. It brings together filmmakers and audiences to foster a rich exchange of ideas and worldviews, making it a crucial platform for collective discovery in cinema.
Creative Idea
Our creative idea was born from the foundational element of cinema: the projector's light. We envisioned each beam of light as a unique perspective—that of a filmmaker, an audience member, a critic. On their own, they are individual points of view. But when they converge, they create a vibrant spectrum, a visual metaphor for the dialogue, discovery, and emotion that the FCVQ generates. This convergence symbolizes the powerful meeting of many viewpoints, a core tenet of the festival. The identity is built on this simple yet profound idea: from many, one cinematic experience, rich with diversity and shared understanding.
Insights & Strategy
The strategy was to visually articulate the FCVQ's core mission of fostering dialogue and focusing on cinema. Using light as a metaphor for individual perspectives, the brand identity was designed as a dynamic system. This approach captures the collaborative nature of the festival, creating a brand that is both artistic and meaningful.
Execution
The execution involved a fluid visual system where beams of light, representing individual perspectives, converge into a colorful spectrum. This expressive element was balanced against the FCVQ’s existing signature grid, which provides rational structure. This duality symbolizes the balance between artistic expression (light) and the technical craft of filmmaking (grid).
Results
The 2025 edition of the Festival de Cinéma de la Ville de Québec was a resounding success, marked by significant growth. The festival saw its private-sector funding quintuple in just three years, demonstrating remarkable partner confidence. This enthusiasm was matched by the public, with indoor venues achieving a 75% average occupancy rate and numerous sold-out screenings. Online, the festival's digital reach surpassed 600,000 impressions, generating significant media attention and underscoring the event's renewed vitality and powerful connection with its audience.
