The publication RAIN consist out of a body of work that emerged from pushing the boundaries of the device and its programme. The artist placed office scanners outdoors, their lamps switched off, making the sensors receptive to the changing natural light. Eventually, the scanners began to paint with the rain. As such, an unexpected force entered the digital sphere, offering an alternative way to capture the world around us.
Who ­– or what – decides which images shape our reality? Are we still free to see what we want in the world, or only what images allow us to see? Can alternative images help us resist this all-consuming force and liberate our gaze of the world?
The design takes inspiration from the motion of a scanner, creating a continuous flow of images and texts. On the inside of the Japanese folded pages, the source code is printed, appearing like abstract poetry.
