Varus 775 is a family-owned distillery based in Lübbecke, near the Teutoburg Forest. The brand draws from regional history, nature, and craftsmanship to create premium spirits with a distinct local identity.
The name is inspired by the Battle of the Teutoburg 9 AD, where Roman general Varus was defeated — halting Rome’s expansion and shaping Europe’s cultural divide between Latin and Germanic worlds. History remembers the conflict. Yet beyond the battlefield, there was exchange. Romans and Germanic peoples traded goods, techniques, and tastes. During Pax Romana, commerce allowed ingredients and ideas to move across regions. Varus 775 shifts the focus from conflict to connection — celebrating trade, craftsmanship, and the shared influences that shaped local identity.
This philosophy is embodied in the brand symbolism representing commerce, negotiation, and peace. The coin reinforces the idea that prosperity grows through connection, and can also function as a pre-order token.
The spirits reflect this dialogue between regions. Local botanicals meet Italian citrus fruits — resulting in products that combine regional authenticity with international resonance.
The range is structured as a three-part system: a glass bottle, an aluminium refill, and a refillable porcelain vessel. The glass is the core product and primary retail expression of the brand. The aluminium functions as a lightweight, sustainable refill format, supporting circular use while lowering production and transport impact. To strengthen storytelling and differentiation, we introduced a refillable porcelain vessel. Inspired by Roman containers, the history of distillation, and the region’s ceramic craftsmanship, the form reinterprets tradition through a contemporary lens. Produced in limited batches and available in three distinct colors, the vessel introduces collectibility into the range. It establishes a distinctive serving ceremony, reinforces cultural narrative, positioning the brand at the intersection of sustainability, craftsmanship, and modern heritage. The visual identity balances past and present.
