Project Summary
The Sitdown Café: the most accessible party café in the world, where people with and without disabilities truly share a festival experience. When the roof comes down, everyone comes together.
Idea
Have you ever tried to get a beer at a bar in a wheelchair?
Or find your friends at a festival, blind?
There are many barriers for people with disabilities.
But the biggest one by far is the social barrier.
People with disabilities often feel excluded, even at festivals.
They’re seen as different—given a separate entrance, a different seat, a different experience.
The Sitdown Café breaks down these divisions and puts everyone on equal ground. By lowering the roof, everyone becomes equal, regardless of ability. A simple idea with a powerful, almost magical effect.
At the Sitdown Café, the biggest barrier—the social barrier—disappears. Everyone celebrates at the same level. People with and without disabilities move naturally among each other and connect in a genuine, new way. 'Ok, so maybe I can't walk. But we can still dance together!'
This pilot for HandicapNL at Amsterdam Open Air was a big hit, sparking interest from many other festivals in the Netherlands and beyond.

Execution
The ‘Sitdown’. A legendary moment in DJ sets. Everyone crouches down together, the tension builds, and then—boom—the place erupts! Now, this magic moment is also available for those who are always sitting down.
The Sitdown Café is the world’s most inclusive party café, where all barriers are joyfully broken down. Of course, the bar is at wheelchair height. There’s a music interpreter, and the menus are in Braille. And with the most accessible playlist to help you 'get down', the roof completely blows off. Or well… actually, it comes down—in spectacular fashion.
There are DJs with and without disabilities, bar staff with and without disabilities, visitors with and without disabilities. Everyone is part of the same party here.

Impact
This first edition at Amsterdam Open Air sparked huge enthusiasm. The number of festivalgoers in wheelchairs increased by over 800%(!) compared to previous years. And 20,000 visitors—along with their friends—witnessed firsthand: people with disabilities aren’t different at all. And this was just the pilot.
Immediately after, requests came in from many events and festivals like DGTL, Sail Amsterdam,AOA, Solar, Paaspop, Concert at Sea, and even Glastonbury. At Eurosonic, the Sitdown Café was hailed as a ‘best in class’ example of festival inclusivity.
