Idea

Almost everyone has fruit at home, yet research repeatedly shows that we still don’t eat enough of it. We often simply forget to grab it. That’s why Albert Heijn came up with an innovative solution: The Whistle Bowl. A hyper-modern, high-tech assistant that actively helps you eat healthier. Thanks to its advanced motion sensors, this bowl whistles at you as you walk by—a handy reminder at just the right moment.
The whistles for this Whistle Bowl were recorded by a three-time world champion whistler, resulting in three unique whistles that you can set yourself. The Whistle Bowl was launched on social media with a humorous introduction film starring Bart & Ilse. The campaign was enthusiastically received, and applications poured in. But only true fans had the chance to win one of the hundred limited editions—a true collector’s item that sparked conversation on social media. Even those who didn’t win still got a reminder to eat fruit more often.
Because with a bowl that whistles at you, you'll eat fruit more often!

Execution

From the idea to the 3D models. From prototypes to final development, the Whistle Bowl was entirely realized in-house. Our team of designers and engineers focused on creating a timeless and stylish object suitable for any interior.
The first step was researching the ideal shape, testing multiple designs. Ultimately, an organic, flowing design was chosen—one that doesn’t feel too industrial and aligns with Albert Heijn’s style.
Parallel to the design process, we investigated the most suitable materials for the bowl. Sustainable resources, such as bamboo (Tonkin), were selected.
To create the ideal sound experience, a sound unit was developed in collaboration with a professional whistling artist. Various prototypes were tested and optimized, evaluating the bowl for feel, style, and functionality.
Production was then launched in Vietnam, with the sound unit produced in China, utilizing the latest technologies. The bowl has been certified according to the strictest safety standards (ECC and US) after extensive testing in England.
Even the packaging was designed in-house and developed sustainably. Final assembly took place in the Netherlands.
The result is an innovative and functional product that meets the highest quality and sustainability standards.

Impact

By giving our target audience a simple reminder every time they passed their Whistle Bowl, we motivated them to grab a piece of fruit more often.
But even those who weren’t lucky enough to win one were so excited about the Whistle Bowl during the social media campaign that eating fruit became top of mind for them as well.
In this way, the Whistle Bowl even influenced the behavior of people who didn’t have one in their living room or kitchen.
